All the Things in Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 6 You Need to Know

Fortnite released Season 6 of Chapter 2 today and if somehow you haven’t already heard, SO MUCH HAS CHANGED! While of course it is still a battle royale, there’s a battle pass, we’re still largely on the Chapter 2 map, enough has changed that it almost feels like a completely different game. To start off with, the first time you load into this season, you’ll first see a video similar to previous seasons that covers some of the ongoing storyline. But when that ends, you become playable, as a solo experience, during what feels like the second part of the video. You help Jonesy, whom is rebeling against the Order, work with The Foundation (a newly identified member of The Seven!) stabilize the Zero Point by closing up Reality tears. To see that in action, check out my experience below!

The theme of this new season is Primal (and wild). That shows up significantly as there are now land-dwelling animals on the island includes wolves, boars, frogs, chickens and we expect to see raptors, yes DINOSAURS, at some point. This theme also covers the items and weapons in the game, minor changes throughout the map, and of course the battlepass skins.

Locations

The first thing always worth covering is the impact to the map and locations that we’re familiar with. What’s new and what has gone away? Here are the significant POI changes:

Gone New
Salty Towers Boney Burbs
Colossal Coliseum Colossal Crops
Sanding Area The Spire
Hunter’s Haven
  Guardian Towers (6)

The six Guardian Towers are located at the end of each of the autumn/fall looking points on the map above. Each of these is guarded by a single NPC which, when defeated, drops an orb that you can carry (similiar to how you would carry a propane tank) and gives you low-ish gravity. If you take this orb to The Spire (in the center of the map), you can place the orb and it will generate Jump Boots.

More minor changes are seen through the map. For example, many of the bridges, such as the one from Boney Burbs to Weeping Woods, now has a more primitive feel.

Weapons

The weapon options have seen nearly a complete overhaul. Gone are ALL of the shotgun options from season 5 (the lever action, the charge, the tac, the dragon’s breath). However, the PUMP SHOTGUN HAS RETURNED! And it’s available in all rarities from uncommon to legendary. They also removed snipers! What they’ve added, however, are makeshift and primal varieties of weapons as well as traditional versions we’ve seen before. This is true across revolvers, shotguns, SMGs and rifles. The Makeshift versions have low clip/magazine sizes, and this appears to be intended to get you to transform them into a primal or traditional version through Crafting. Also, with snipers gone, they did add bows to the game, which come in Makeshift, Mechanical and Primal varities. Furthermore, again, through crafting, you can create some special bows including Mechanical Shockwave Bow, the Mechanical Explosive Bow, the Primal Stink Bow and the Primal Flame Bow. To go along with these bows, they’ve also added a new ammo type called, you guessed it, arrows.

For the traditional weapons, you can still find (or craft in some cases) pump shotguns, tactical SMG, the P90, RPGs, ARs and SCARs.

There are indeed still SOME of the exotics in the game. You can find the following from characters:

  • The Dub
  • Chug Cannon
  • Shadow Tracker
  • Hop Rock Dualies

Crafting

So, what is all of this crafting business? Well, in addition to adding arrows as a new item, they’ve also added Animal Bones and Mechanical Parts. These are used to combine with Makeshift weapons to “craft” those weapons into traditional or Primal versions. For example, you can find a Rare (aka blue) Makeshift shotgun and use animal bones to craft it into an Epic (aka purple) Primal Shotgun, or instead, you can use mechanical parts to craft it into an Epic Pump shotgun. Make sense?

You can combine the Primal Bow with Stink Sacs (that come from frogs!) or Stink Fish to craft the Primal Stink Bow or with a gas can or fireflies to craft the Primal Flame Bow. And with the Mechanical bow, you combine it with Shockwaves to make the Mechanical Shockwave Bow or with grenades to craft the Mechanical Explosive Bow.

Separate from the weapons, you can also craft a Hunter’s Cloak (which is used to tame the Wolves and/or Boars) by crafting Meat and Animal Bones together.

Rotation

With the new season, 3 MAJOR rotation capabilities are gone. Bouncers have been removed, sand tunneling is gone and teleport crystals are no more. Additionally, rift fish, which had been removed due to a glitch several weeks ago, have not returned. However, there are still cars and boats in the game. You can still find peppers, and spicy fish have returned.

What NEW ways of rotation have they added? From the Guardian Towers, there’s a mechanism for boosting toward The Spire, presumably to help get you closer while carrying an orb. As mentioned above, they’ve also added a mythic item called the Jump Boots which have allow you to do jump combos for low gravity and even give you redeploy. They’ve added chickens to the game which, if you are familiar with the Zelda games, allow you to pick them up and they’ll help you fly, similar to low-ish gravity. And yes, there are ways of combining to get MORE out of this, like picking up a chicken and bouncing off of tires, or using the Guardian Towers, or using a shockwave (though this one probably necessitates another player’s assistance since holding a chicken doesn’t let you use any of your items without dropping it).

Lastly, even though rift fish are gone, some of the new Characters around the map offer the option of immediately rifting you from that spot. You’ll definitely want to learn the locations of these particular ones so you can flee the storm in a hurry (so long as the character hasn’t perished in the storm themselves!)

Fishing

Fishing is pretty familiar to previous seasons with only some minor changes. There are 44 fish in the collection (though this could increase as the season progresses). Thanksfully, the irritating Snowy Flopper is finally gone! This really should have only been around during the Winter event, but whatever. Of those 44 fish, here they are:

  • Floppers (#1 - #3)
    • Orange, Green, Blue
  • Shield Fish (#4 - #8)
    • Black and Blue, Black Striped, Green, Pink, Light Blue
  • Slurp Fish (#9 - #13)
    • Blue, Yellow, Purple, Black, White
  • Small Fry (#14 - #18)
    • Light Blue, Tan, Purple Top, Black, Blue
  • Stink Flooper (#19 - #23)
    • Unspecified, Blue, Clown, Purple, Orange
  • Spicy Fish (#24 - #28)
    • Molten, Drift, White Spotted, Southern Spicy, Sky Blue
  • Jellyfish (#29 - #33)
    • Slurp, Peely, Purple, Dark Vangaurd, Cuddle
  • Hop Flopper (#34 - #38)
    • Drift, Atlantic, Chum, Chinook, Coho
  • Vendetta Flopper (#39)
  • Cuddle Fish (#40 - #44)
    • Unspecified, Blue, Green, Orange, Red

The only NEW fish you’ll see in this list is the Cuddle Fish. The Cuddle Fish acts similar to a promixity mine, except that it is only triggered when shot.

Characters

As of the start of the season, there are 46 characters located across the map. This season, the characters offer the following purposes:

  • Quests for Gold
  • Bounties for Gold
  • Upgrade Weapons
  • Sell Weapons (some include Exotics)
  • Hire
  • Duel
  • Prop Disguise
  • Activate Rift
  • Reveal Future Storm Circle
  • Lore/Dialogue
